After reading the first two chapters of "What is Life?", I can see how this text will become an excellent jumpstart for our human application of these core truths about our biosphere. "We are walking talking minerals" (page 49) on the surface of this planet. "Life, challengining gravity, moves matter horizontally across the surface" (page 49), the intriguing Mr. Vernadsky points out. This elementary approach to understanding the role of living matter will be the foundation of how we sustain not ourselves, but the planet as a whole. Taking collective ego out of the equation will facilitate an open forum in which to discuss the role of the individual ego in sustaining the surface of this planet. What we lable as "human" is theoretically no different than my dog or the plants on my porch from a chemical standpoint. As memebers of the DNA family, we need to work together to help out our other less fortunate counterparts, mainly the O^2 and 0^3 families, along with other cousins as well..

On the philosophy of "shorts" that Nonprophet alludes to, I have similar feelings of content for the escapism of short-lived video humor. I feel it's not sustainable for me to be entertained by such forms of art. The art of television and video advertisements, in my case, wasted away portions of my ability to devote attention to other forms of media that require a much longer duration of analysis. After years of living with the main cause of my attention disruption, my roommates and I decided to rid our house of the cable box of doom. Free from advertisements and menial censored entertainment, I am starting to realize possibilities of attention freedom that I never once felt possible. Film, quality HBO series on DVD, and books have filled the void, although I feel a certain post-pardon depression with the birth of reinvigorated long-term attention mongers such as the media described previously. In all awareness, I know that I really won't miss my "figure" and "lifestyle" now that the old baby was put to sleep. Good riddens; here's to the promotion of television-free living!! Sustainable indeed!!

Now, I am not ruling out the quality of certain "shorts" found on television and the internet. I know that many of these art forms are meaningful. Mostly, it's the advertisements that kill my soul. It is this reason why I believe so many pieces of this overplayed genre are not of better quality. Why would an artist envision his or her piece of work on television? ANS: $$$$$!! U-tube, on the other hand, is free (mostly) from this plague of corporate interest. So, I will explore this medium and find something suitable to post.

It might be difficult to decipher fact from fiction in an interview of this caliber, but nonetheless, Wal-Mart’s new "polices" could be a sign of significant cultural change. For a mega company with such strong right wing connections, to begin discourse on "greening" itself will surly have an ample trickling down effect that might pose actual change in corporate retailing philosophy. Good luck to "General Lee" Scott in his aspirations of a more sustainable world!

Checkmate!

"Imperial Priorites" is an important concept to examine during this age of "peak oil." After watching the documentary and researching "peak oil," evaluating the current adminstration's motives and international policies takes a fresh eye. From the imperialist standpoint, the perpetual growth of the empire is the top concern. If peak oil is here or will soon be here, is it not in the empire's best interest to secure the last major source of oil on the planet? When we cross over the peak, the western economy will indeed cease to grow. It is now a game of chess in the middle east of differing alliances with different economic needs and desires. We all know the war wasn't fought for "freedom" or "democracy" or any other rhetorical device used to control mass public will. The war wasn't fought for WMDs or fear of terror. Knocking off the queen or putting the king in check was the primary reason for the war. Bishops, pawns, and even rooks are lost in this effort typically. The game is far from over, yet the graveyard of our former pieces increases every day. This concept is quite scary, but in the foreign realm of abstract political games, loss of half your board in order to secure a checkmate is not quite as obscure as you or I might claim. I typically despise sports analogies, but in analyzing the chaos of this event, it almost seems appropriate given the players we are discussing. This is the mentality we are governed by.

How are we to evade this terrible game of death and destruction? The Center for Sustainablity offers a suggestion in its statement. Freedom from the clutches of government interest, which inevitabley is an economic interest, seems to be a viable option. In 30 years, pehaps the growing trend of midlife crises might be environmentally centered. BlueSkyBifurcation is on to something in this regard. The importance of knowing that the empire might lose this chess game is quintessential in our survial on this planet. I tend to have imperial sympathies in my notions, but I do realize that it might end much more quickly than I had previously anticipated. That is why I feel it is of the utmost urgency to prolong and propagate the discourse of sustainable options and symbiotic direction for myself and all other followers.

Speaking of which, my very good friend from Carlisle, Becki Walker, is a sustainablity specialist at Dickinson College. I want her to sit in on our class and tour the center. Perhaps there are oppurtunites for us to work together as part of the central region of Pennsylvania's efforts to promote sustainable practices. She is quite enthralled with our class objectives and goals of the center. Check out Dickinson's Program Connecting our movements could have amazing results. More on this to follow as I gather more information and set up a concrete plan...

A Journal of my Voyage!

October 4, 2006

Departed State College at 1200
Arrived in Pittsburgh at 1500
Departed Pittsburgh at 1720
Arrived in Atlanta at 1900

Upon reaching Atlanta, my mother, grandmother, and I traveled to a motel approximately 4 miles away from the airport via a rented SUV. Backtracking to the decision-making process of selecting the SUV versus another smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle, size was indeed all that mattered. Since my own personal funds were not used for this venture, I was largely left out of the vehicle assessment. The issue of fuel was not even brought up. For the typical American, often times fuel-efficiency is not a factor even if it correlates to saving money at the pump. What matters to a large portion of the country is the size of the vehicle. To overcome this mindset will be an extremely difficult task, especially for the older generations.

Tomorrow, we leave Atlanta at 0500 to drive, in an elevated fashion, to Fort Benning to see my brother who will be graduating from boot camp at the end of the week. He will soon be fighting under the cloak of freedom to ensure that my family can rent SUVs anywhere in the country for the rest of the modern oil era indefinitely. This trip has already proved to be uneasy in many aspects…

October 7, 2006

I had planned on keeping a more detailed journal of my travels, but I have been quite busy with family events and pyscological analysis during the past few days. My brother graduated on Friday morning in a full military show. The ceremony started off with two tanks dancing with each other on a large grassy to the tune of "Bad to the Bone." Within seconds after the appearence of the tanks, camoflagued infantry soldiers ran onto the field performing a number of deadly tactics and complex formations. The crowd cheered the entire time as I envisioned the Roman Collesuem in all its glory ready to witness the brutal death of a helpless barbarian. I cannot describe in words what the chill down my spine felt like, but it was neither positive or negative. I was truly "shocked and awed" by the display of Imperial force that my brother now has commited his life to.

He is a different person. He's calm, collected, responislbe, polite, and mature: a vast contrast from my previous experiences with him. The army broke him much like a horse. Although he would have much more perferred to be trained under a whisperer, the whip was quick and just as effective. He's confident of himself and of the mission. A valient soldier, he patiently waits for his next set of orders directed by Uncle Sam. He makes no decisions for himself, and he loves it.... Tomorrow, I leave for Pennsylvania. I look forward to callaborating with all of you on the podcast when I come back. My mind is too scattered to focus on much right now, and for that I apologize.

These pictures were taken at the center. I wanted to focus on the different forms of energy production that the center utilizes. Power can be harvested from the wind using the windmill and the sun from the “green rooftop” of the yurt and from the solar panels on the solar energy converter. Any one person or family by can develop all of these alternative sources of energy simply by constructing the appropriate machines near a targeted location. Hypothetically, we all could live off the grid and sustain ourselves indefinitely if need be. Functional ideas such as green roofs could be implemented in a larger urban environment which would cut reliance on heating and cooling fuels, although I do no have numbers to support such claims. Imagine a “green” North Philadelphia free of heating bills in the winter. Amazing social consequences would follow such organic implements. In rural or suburban areas, visualize windmills as being a standard fixture in the front yard. These natural conventions are a reality and only exist to be followed through. Dependence on the global supply chain of fuel can be significantly decreased to a level that will dull its importance on global politics. Rephrasing the lyrics of popular country singer Kenny Chesnsey, (yes, Georgia’s still on my mind) “No blood, no oil, no problem!”

The wind's energetic gift the center.

The sun's energetic gift to the center.

The plant kingdom's energetic gift to the center.

Homecoming

Time was standing still. The fractions of time were opened up for dissection. My watch was pointed upside down, and it felt like it was melting off my wrist. Pacing back and forth throughout my apartment, I soon realized where I was again: back in Hades for 40 years. See, my apartment is a “safe-space” in purgatory, but only if I don’t leave. I have to wait for my term to be up. But why am I confined to my apartment? I have committed a serious crime against humanity. Dancing with fate, every sinful day of my existence goes not without surveillance. I deserve the madness that strangles my neck… Pacing back and forth, to and fro, back and forth…something isn’t right. Am I to learn something in this hell of pseudoscience?

The toilet had informed me of my sentence. And the reason: I subconsciously rejected the ultimate plan that the One has for my life. There is no negotiation. I can only hope that during my soul’s existence in Hades I can learn from me mistakes. If I can learn how to speak, how to write, how to communicate, then I can be free. I need only to write the truth on paper, and it will be done. But I can’t. I pace and stare at my watch. I can’t take it off. It provides me with temporary safety. Time will follow in accordance with what needs to happen… Events, circulating and recycling themes, have a time and place. But for now, I am stuck…

I killed the electric car.. I think?

I have a confession: It was I who maliciously murdered the electric car. It was I, the consumer, who took no time or energy to explore such options when purchasing a car. It was I, the consumer, who was not informed about the possibilities of this technology and its implications for our biosphere. Of course, other powers had their influences poured over my conscious, but still, I was blind.

The film documented an almost unbelievable cover-up carried out by powers out of touch with the common man and world. A corporation, which under the 14th amendment is characterized as "one person," is a corrupting psychopath which will inevitably do harm to "people." GM is not a person. GM, and others alike, is a virus which desperately needs to replicate its profit in order to ensure generational prosperity. The only way to combat a virus is with anti-viral medication, mostly laws and ordinances. Still, the virus won't die. The biosphere will be forced to live with the virus, but it can be contained by consumers uniting under a simple cause of common sense. This is plausible.
